Short stories are great for the busy season

A Collection of Short Fiction

by Joan L. Cannon

A collection of widely published and, in some cases, award-winning short stories from well-respected novelist Joan L. Cannon. All the stories contain rich detail of both language and imagery. They are wide-ranging, with a variety of characters, experiences, and settings and are told in a unique style that is well- seasoned with both wit and insight.

Catching UP!

Galleys that went to press or went back to press this week:
WENDELL & TYLER: WE'RE OFF! by James Kincaid
Even their guidebooks – Worst Places to Eat, Wackiest Roadside Attractions, and Don’t Go Here! – offer no guidance. These two 16-year-olds are off on a summer-long road trip, from Los Angeles to Atlanta, without any clear idea what they are doing, what they might run into, what they might discover.

NO Galleys went out or went out again, this week.

Work began or continued on the following:

SINS OF THE FATHERS: A Dora the D.R.E. Mystery, Vol 1. by A. A. Mann
As a Director of Religious Education at Our Lady of Grace
Catholic Church in the border town of San Pequeno, Texas,
Dora meets many interesting and unusual people.  This time
she meets Death.

Love does not end with death or at the gravesite. It lingers in this world, as powerful after death as before. Ashley Dunlap and David Paine discover this first hand, as a benevolent spirit guides their lives toward its desires. Will the two follow this spirit’s pathway or rebel against its power to follow their own free will?
This spirit of a murdered family member hovers over the two youths, providing timely nudges and direct pushes toward chance meetings and shared experiences. Her influence twists and turns their earthbound lives into a series of meetings and departures until the helix of their family history finally completes its cycle.

Jack's News!

  by your bookstore cat,
and gossip columnist!
We are all hoping you enjoyed Thanksgiving as much as we did. Personally, I didn't try the turkey again this year...

Oh, they tried to give me some, but Nuh UH! If it isn't crunchy and come out of a box, I KNOW better than to eat it! Oh, Kathy picked a good one, and it looked great. AND it Smelled Really Good! But my first  human Mama, Terry L. White, taught me how to eat real food...and I'm sticking to what She Said!

We are blessed to know you all.

This year we will celebrate again by sending our thanks to all the talented authors we represent.

Thanks, Too. from the kids at Jemez Pueblo
for the books we sent last month.

The Government built them a great new Library, assuming they could use the books from their old library, but they never had a library before. They need new or gently used books. Happy Thanksgiving EVERYONE!

Arline wants me to say how grateful we are for all of you. And she's right! Without you, there wouldn't be a bookstore for me to be the Bookstore Cat of.

We are all wishing you the best of things to give thanks for and, as for me, I'm looking forward to some of that Big Bird I saw Roger put in the refrigerator!

Please don't forget Our

I had some great responses from our authors. Thanks again to Barbara Grengs who is sending her entire Toby collection. (Barbara, Arline is working on Toby 6. I swear.)

Free Book for November and a grammar tip

Sense and Sensibility FREE for November

order as usual.
You will not be charged!
by Jane Austen

Had this book been written today, the title might have been Sense and Sensuality, but Regency authors were much more circumspect.

The title refers to the two eldest Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, one of whom (Elinor) embraces practicality and restraint while the other (Marianne) gives her whole heart to every endeavor.

When the Dashwoods _ are sent, almost impoverished, to a small cottage in Devonshire after the death of their father and the machinations of their brother's wife, they accept their new circumstances with as much cheer as they can muster even though their brother and his wife have taken over the family estate and fortune. Their characters, albeit wildly different in their approaches to life, are impeccably honest and intelligent _ and their suitors take notice.

In an interestingly twist, the end of this novel brings into question which sister represents which part of the title.

Question from the E-mail: What is a dangling participle?

Answer: A dangling participle happens when someone gets the parts of a sentence in the wrong order.  I can dangle a participle with the best of them and once had a woman in a barn with a broken hip.  Must've been the roof.

Here are some examples:

Rushing to the catch the bus, Bob's wallet fell out of his pocket.  Well the Wallet wasn't rushing...

Flying south for the winter, I saw a huge flock of swallows... actually, I wasn't flying South, the birds were.

Falling through thin Ice, the jogger dived into the lake to save the dog.  The jogger didn't fall through the ice, he dove in.  The dog fell.

The rest are self-explanatory:

The burglar was about 30 years old, white, 5' 10", with wavy hair weighing about 150 pounds.
The family lawyer will read the will tomorrow at the residence of Mr. Hannon, who died June 19 to accommodate his relatives.
Mrs. Shirley Baxter, who went deer hunting with her husband, is very proud that she was able to shoot a fine buck as well as her husband.
Organ donations from the living reached a record high last year, outnumbering donors who are dead for the first time.
The dog was hungry and made the mistake of nipping a 2-year-old that was trying to force feed it in his ear.
~ We spent most of our time sitting on the back porch watching the cows playing Scrabble and reading.
~ Hunting can also be dangerous, as in the case of pygmies hunting elephants armed only with spears.

Thanks from the Kids at Jermez Pueblo

Roger is playing, but I'm not singing yet.
I wanted to tell you,
we got the nicest message from
Write Words Author Jim Kincaid this morning.
He and his lovely wife, Nita, are shelving
the books we sent to the Kids at Jemez Pueblo.

The government built them a great new library (after assuming they'd have books from their Old Library), but they have No Books, so Arline sent two boxes mostly books at 5th grade level as we do very few books for little kids here. They were publisher's copies, of course. So they hadn't been much used, just looked over and shelved. She sent mostly adventure stories and some science fiction.

Here's a picture of Jim :

Jim and his wife, Nita, are visiting at the school. Here's what Jim wrote:

Nita and I were shelving your wonderful collection of books today when some
kids came in and wanted to know where they came from...

"An author and a publisher."

"What's a publisher?"

"She prints books, makes books."

"You mean she writes books AND makes books?"

"Yep."

"Nah."

"Yep."

"Wow... And she sent all these books to us?"

Jim told us earlier how much the kids love to read, so we're real glad they will enjoy them.

As your bookstore cat, let me say how happy all of us were to hear they finally got there. It took us awhile to get them all together and then Roger had to take them to the PO, because neither Arline, nor I, do any heavy lifting. Roger really is good to us....

We do urge you, if you have any new, or gently used, books that kids K thru 8th grade might enjoy, please consider sending them along to the school. Here's the address:

I wanted her to send my copy of Puss N Boots, but she said it was "too ratty." I do have to admit to a few claw marks and some bites on the cover...have to say it's much-loved.
