Arline has flu again. I just can't believe how frail humans are. I mean when a cat sneezes, it's because there's dust in the air, or someone spilled the pepper. Humans cough and sneeze allthe time and they get these red eyes and noses and everything drips.  So messy...

A Good Read + A Plot Question

Grab your compass and come along with the crew of the motor ketch the Lady Dance. Be with them as they unravel the mystery of the lost continent of MU for a great adventure.

Question from the E-mail:  I'm confused about how to plot.  The members of my writers group all have different advice about this. What's your stand on it?

Answer:  Here it is, straight from my workshop handout on plot.

                                           PLOT

Ideally, plot should arise out of characters and be shaped by what they want and what stands in the way of their reaching their goals.

If you know your characters, what happens to them will arise naturally out of their beliefs, desires, experiences and actions.

Or it will arise out of the desires and actions of the villain, or the interaction between the protagonists and antagonists. It is vital that you know your characters innermost feelings and see clearly their reasons for acting as they do. (Remember Motivation is key.)
  
Every story should have a beginning, middle, and end. Every plot should advance with rising action, that follows the rule of three and keeps good company with dramatic structure and form. Remember, plot can evolve and change, as your characters evolve and change. But it is far, far, easier to write a story if you know what will happen in it first.

The Beginning: Every story starts with a character who wants something and why.

If he wants something he can’t have, the character has a problem  that must be solved and how he or she will solve it determines  what the story is about (PLOT) . If the character doesn’t want anything, there’s no story.

Every story is about someone who is striving for something, someone who is taking a risk. The reasons for taking that risk should not be entirely selfish, either.  Cinderella wanted to go to the ball, because her father had told he for years that she would go and be the most beautiful girl there. But her step-mother and step-sisters stood in her way. They were barriers that stood between Cinderella and what she wanted. Usually, main characters must be prepared to take risks to get what they want.  She took the risk, even though she knew that at midnight her fancy clothes would turn back to rags and if she didn't leave first, everyone there would laugh at her.

The Middle must contain Obstacles: Every character who wants something meets with barriers that stand in his or her way.

When a character meets a barrier, conflict (and tension and suspense that help hold your reader’s interest) is born. IF there is no conflict, there is no story. A hangnail is not a barrier. Something important has to be at stake and the character has to face the possibility of losing it ALL. Every real barrier is a plot turning point. Either the character will climb over the wall or he’ll fall to his death. Either way, something important will change.

Usually, in the standard dramatic structure there are three major barriers (or plot turning points)that stand in the character’s way and the last one contains within it, the “Bleak Moment.”

The bleak moment is the place in the plot where it seems as if Nothing will Ever Work Out for the character. It’s that “ALL IS LOST” moment. This is the same for every kind of fiction, no matter the genre.

For Cinderella it was when she was waltzing in the Prince’s arms and the clock struck twelve. For Ishmael, in Moby Dick, it came after the final crisis, Ahab was dead, the ship sunk, everyone else had drowned and he was struggling in the water, knowing he was going to drown, too. For Ishmael the bleak moment happened just before the coffin bobbed to the surface and gave him something to hold on to.

The End: The resolution of the story is the end.

For Cinderella, the bleak moment came early, but the resolution turned up later. It was when the slipper fit and the prince asked for her hand. For Ishmael it was when the other ship spotted hm floating on the coffin and rescued him.

Now endings don’t always have to be happy. They can be sad, too. But all good plots, if they are satisfying to the reader,  have a resolution. Sure there is the occasional “Make up your own mind” plot. One of the reasons I hated the Robin Cook’s book Coma was because it didn’t really have an ending. When you plot and plan, don’t forget to find a real resolution for your character. Either they will get what they want, or they won’t.

A good resolution has all the answers, and ties up all the loose ends.

• 20 caramels, coarsely chopped

1. In a large bowl, combine the first four ingredients. In a microwave, melt chips; stir until smooth. Pour over cereal mixture and toss to coat.
2. Immediately spread onto waxed paper-lined baking sheet; let stand until set, about 20 minutes.
3. Break into pieces. Store in an airtight container. Yield: 6 cups.

Great Read and a question

Environmental specialist Nicola Bosco did not think twice about the random security check before entering the building in D.C. She placed her designer briefcase carrying government papers on the conveyor belt and endured the frisk. The wand went up one side of her body and down the other without a bleep. Her shoes were inspected for any suspicious crevices.

Question from the e-mail: I've been asked to do a guest article for my local  newspaper taking the information from a term paper I wrote about waste disposal.  The editor asked ME, saying it was information we all could use. But I don't know how to footnote the article. How will the readers know where I got the information???

First: Congrats on the local interest in your subject.  Offer to string for the paper and collect little money for hours of work, but they will be enjoyable hours and you will be able to increase the number of bylines in your publications list.

Answer: In the body of an article you can't very well footnote, as you did in your paper. Instead, you should give the info and then "attribute" the information, by finishing the sentence with the source of the info.

   "The popultion over 60 has more than doubled in the last 30 years, according to the United States Bureau of Census."

That tells the readers where the information came from without any fuss.

Hint: You might also want to put the information first in the sentence and the attribution last, or half your paragraphs will begin with, "According to..."

Great Read for a Snow Day!

 HOT SOUP FOR A COLD DAY!

You can read while it's heating up.

What You Need

1/2 pound ground raw chicken or turkey

1/4 cup  chopped onion

2 cloves  garlic, minced

2cups  milk

1 10-3/4-ounce can condensed cream of chicken soup

1 7-ounce can whole kernel corn with sweet peppers, drained

 

1 medium  tomato, chopped (3/4 cup)

1 4-ounce can diced green chiles, drained

2 tablespoons  snipped fresh cilantro or parsley

1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper (cayenne)

 

1 cup  shredded Monterey Jack cheese (4 ounces)

 Fresh cilantro or parsley (optional)

Make It

1. In a large saucepan or Dutch oven cook ground chicken or turkey, onion, and garlic until chicken or turkey is brown and onion is tender. Drain fat from pan.

2. Stir in milk, cream of chicken soup, corn, chopped tomato, chili peppers, cilantro or parsley, and ground red pepper. Bring to boiling. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add cheese; cook and stir until cheese melts. Garnish each serving with additional cilantro or parsley, if desired.
 
Makes 4 servings.

Classic Fried Chicken Recipe

Ingredients

• 2 cup(s) buttermilk
• 2 tablespoon(s) hot pepper sauce
• 1 tablespoon(s) salt
• 2 chickens, each cut into 8 pieces
• 2 cup(s) flour
• 1 1/2 teaspoon(s) baking powder
• 1 teaspoon(s) black pepper
• 1 teaspoon(s) paprika
• 5 cup(s) vegetable oil for frying
  or
• Purists claim Lard is the necessary shortening ingredient to truly fry SOUTHERN chicken.

Directions

1. In extra-large (2- to 2 1/2-gallon) zip-top plastic bag, combine buttermilk, hot pepper sauce and 1 tsp. salt. Add chicken pieces, turning to coat. Seal bag, pressing out excess air. Place bag in bowl; refrigerate chicken for 2 to 24 hours to marinate, turning bag over once.
   
2. In pie plate or bowl, stir flour, baking powder, pepper, paprika and remaining 2 tsp. salt until well mixed. Remove a few pieces of chicken from buttermilk mixture, shaking off excess liquid. Add chicken to flour mixture, turning to coat well. Place chicken on wire rack set over waxed paper, without letting pieces touch. Repeat with remaining chicken pieces, using a second rack if necessary; let stand 15 minutes to set coating. Discard buttermilk mixture.
   
3. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 250ºF. Line two large cookie sheets with paper towels. Divide shortening between two 12-inch skillets, preferably electric (there should be about 1/2 inch of oil in each skillet) and heat over medium heat until temperature reaches 360ºF on a deep-fry thermometer.
   
4. To each skillet, add 4 pieces of chicken, skin side down, being careful not to crowd pieces. Cover skillets and cook until chicken is light golden brown on the bottom, 4 to 5 minutes. Turn pieces over and cook, covered (reducing heat to medium-low, if necessary, to a temperature of 300ºF), 8 to 10 minutes longer for white meat, and 13 to 15 minutes longer for dark meat, turning pieces every 4 or 5 minutes.
   
   Chicken is done when well browned on all sides and juices run clear when thickest part is pierced with the tip of a knife. Transfer chicken to lined cookie sheets to drain. Keep warm in oven. Repeat with remaining chicken.

My good friend Virginia Winters sent us a copy of the press release she is sending out as soon as we get her book back to press.  It was delayed a bit for the new cover.

I like her new cover a lot. Except for one thing. What it really needs is a cat! I do understand the little girl in the story has a stuffed toy donkey.  Surely, it coulda been a feline! Oh well, donkeys are cute, too.

Arline is mailing the checks. So much time-consuming work involved when she can't pay by Paypal, but all of you should have your money soon. If you haven't heard from us by the middle of next week, you can assume you had no sales for the fourth quarter of 2014. :(
