A Literary Vacation and a Writing tip.

A collection of short stories
By Members of the Readers' Station

A warm and wonderful collection of short stories that will take you to a number of places. Enjoy your trip to the past and the future, and travel from the Taj Mahal to the Stars.

Question from the e-mail:  I'm taking my first actual class though years ago I attended a workshop you taught.  People keep saying, "Write what you know." But I'm a retired 10th grade teacher. I grew up in a small Southern town. Taught  in a small Southern town. Lived my whole life in a small Southern town. Beyond chaperoning a senior class on a trip to Europe, I have never traveled. Certainly, I have never done anything impressive. What can I ever write about?

Answer: First let me say, you also know what you can learn. Consider writers of historical fiction. They often have never lived in the times and places they portray, but they create them out of imagination, and the historical fact they have learned about through research.

Also, you have lived a lifetime of experiences. You were a teen, a college student, a young married woman, and possibly a working mother. You have experience with children: those you have taught, and quite likely your own. You know first hand through experience what young people are like.

You taught 10th graders, so you know what  high school is like. You can write books for teens. Yes, the fashion changes and the slang changes, and so on --- but human nature doesn't change. You have first-hand knowledge of how teens think and feel. Skip the slang, the attitude is the important part.

You grew up and lived in a small Southern town. Small towns are not all alike, but you know about neighborhood interactions, school-family interactions, church interactions, and depending on what other interests you may have had, you could have many other experiences.

That senior trip, for instance, could make a great background for a young or new adult novel --- told from a student's viewpoint, not the teacher's. All that takes is a little imagination. A bit of putting yourself in someone else's place and saying What if I was the student? What if I had a crush on a guy to whom I was invisible on the trip?

Take Pat Conroy for instance, since you both grew up in small Southern towns and trained and worked as teachers. His novels are third person, limited omniscient viewpoint. But they are still (loosely?) based on his own personal experiences.

Conroy wrote The Lords of Discipline about being a teenaged “cadet” in a strict, private, military school. Conroy attended The Citadel in his youth.

He wrote The Great Santini about a boy’s strained relationship with his domineering father. Conroy’s own father was quite a force in his life as he has publicly stated on more than one occasion.

He wrote The Prince of Tides about a Southern Writer whose poet sister attempted suicide. Conroy’s sister, a poet, has attempted suicide several times, a fact he has also discussed in TV and magazine interviews (research again).

He wrote Beach Music about an expatriate, American, writer who returns to the South in order to care for his mother while she is dying of cancer. Conroy (who often says  he lives in Rome, Italy, not Rome, Georgia!) wrote that book during and after the time he spent back in the USA caring for his mother in her final illness.

The only “non-fiction” (purported to be true) book Conroy ever wrote was The Water is Wide an account of his career as a schoolteacher on a barrier island off the coast of Carolina. The book served as a harsh indictment of the inequality of education for black and isolated children, and his protest about the differences ultimately cost Conroy his job as an educator.

But all Conroy's “fiction” still reflects his life experiences. And each fictional work has a different thrust. Not bad for a boy from a "small Southern town."

Author Michael Field is looking for Reviewers

Someone in the quiet suburb of Pineview is torturing and killing average citizens in a manner that sickens and shocks the most seasoned police officers. Only when the body count starts to rise do the police identify a method to the madness - each victim’s death is associated with their occupation.

Due to his recent move and other factors he is having a difficult time finding authors that will conduct book reviews.

Any authors or readers that would be willing to do a read & review please contact him via Facebook. If you are not yet a friend, just send a friend request his way and go from there.

Authors helping other authors...

Tips on getting your book "out there" -- This book offers advice on everything from finding review sources, to writing press releases, to making your first speech and TV appearances.

Book Promotion, Author's Advice

People have asked me a number of times how authors can help one another on Facebook, Linked In, Good Reads, and other social media sites.

It's very simple to do.  If you see a post from our company, me, or any of the other authors we publish, you should "Share" the info and also "Like" them. That will help boost how far the post travels into cyberspace and we all know that no one ever buys a book unless they know it exists.

Spreading the word across the Internet by liking and Sharing the books of other authors, you also increase the number of times your own posts get shared, because if you post often FB will single you out as a buys user and will help boost your audience. When you do that it will always help get  your postings a wider range on Newsfeed.

Be careful what you say and friend everyone who asks.  Remember, the more friends you have the more people will become aware of your written work. Stay public if you want people to be able to get info about your books.

Look up your favorite authors on FB and send them a friend request. They will not say no. They want to sell books, too. And remember, whoever shares your info will be passing it along to all their friends as well.

I am not on FB as often as many of you, or even as often as I'd like. But I try to check in once a day, to like what I see from all our authors, and to share anything you  have posted about your books.

If you want to eventually sell books, let people know what are writing. Tell all your friends if your wrote a new chapter yesterday. Post a page on your blog once a week, saying what progress you have made on your work in progress.  Post possible covers here and let your friends comment. When the book advance copy comes out! Post the news  about it.  When the e-book copies become available (you will know because you'll get copies of them). Post about that! When the official launch date happens POST again! Ditto for launch parties, personal appearances, and whatever you do to promote your work.

Friending other authors is always a good idea, too. Some of you have done this. Some may already know some other authors. But anyone looking for authors to friend, can easily find them at the Write Words Inc. -- www.writewordsinc.com -- book store. IF you are friends with other authors and help them boost their work, they, in turn will do the same for you.

If you need reviews, comments, help with early readings, remember, those are the friends you can ask to help.

Every author gets copies of the e-book files to use for review purposes and for promotion.  If a friend has been interested, ask them to review the work and send them a review copy. They can post the rewiew on Good Reads, on Amazon.com, or other places on the net. Or they can send it to you and you can do it.

Get to know one another and act as a team. We are all in this together. We can help one another out. And it doesn't take a lot of time or thought.

A good read and a recipe

This is a story about what home can mean to those fortunate enough to have spent their early lives in a place with a family history. It opens when the three Adams children face the fateful summer when Maiden Run seems besieged. The echoes of that summer sound in each of their lives thereafter. The theme of what is so often lost to "progress" runs through the story the way Maiden Run flows through the farm. Finally, the Adams children must deal each in his or her own way with how to continue without that place, and we are reminded of how deep some roots grow.
