Catching UP!

Books that went to press or went to press again, this week:
SECOND GROWTH, by Joan L. Cannon

When his career and his marriage both are destroyed by his feckless father, his reputation and his livelihood in shambles, he is forced to leave behind everything that has become meaningful to him. In rural Vermont, he stumbles on a way of life that nourishes a second growth. A near tragedy is the catalyst that enables him to dare to trust. He ultimately learns he must lower his own barriers.

Galleys that went out or went out again this week:
Fourteen-year-old Luke dreams of spending July at  Camp Unlimited, where campers explore cave networks, set off fireworks in pyrotech workshops, and sleep in tree house hammocks. But to get into the camp, Luke needs to demonstrate excellence in a sport, the arts, or
school.
More likely, he’ll end up at SURF, his town’s rec camp, where athlete’s foot, mildew, and warts plague the gym, bedbugs and lice infest the couches, and clumps of hair make frequent appearances in the burgers.

THE LAST CHRONICLER by Judy Johns Heathcoe
While tunneling through a mountain in the Russian Southern Urals, a team of engineers are trapped in a deep, large, cavern containing a living rain forest. Looking for a way out, they discover a hermitage that once was home to a historical society who called themselves chroniclers, whose members were able to travel in time to view a famous person or event in order to record history correctly.
In the hermitage library, among the many chronicles, they are privileged to view the lives of Vincent van Gogh, Edgar Allan Poe, and Nicholas II, last Tsar of Russia, and his family.  But hiding out and watching their every move are the remaining chroniclers who are determined to keep their existence a secret, even to the point of murdering any that discover it. The engineers find themselves running for their lives through the seemingly endless forest, wondering whether they would face death at the hands of the dangerous and adamant chroniclers. . .or the primeval creatures of the forest.

 Jack's News!
  by your Official Bookstore Cat,
and Gossip Columnist.
Heard from C.M. Albright this week, one of our most prolific authors.  He sends the following about a terrible dirty trick someone played on him:
Warning!
I had to tell you about this one. I got an email saying a new robust company poised to become a top player in Hollywood with $100 million seed money in the bank wanted to option THE LITTLE MORNINGS for a movie. They sent me a contract giving me $100,000 for a one-year option and purchase of the rights. But if the film's budget were to go over $5 million, I'd get even more.

Wow! Plus Wow again, right?

Bottom line ended up after a few days back and forth that they wanted my banking info to transfer my $100,000 into my account.

Little clues that popped up: the Director spent too much time selling me on FastVision Entertainment and how much money they had and so on. Plus below his signature the address was: 4th Floor Wilshire Blvd. and La Cienega, Beverley Hills California. Now anybody living or working in Beverly Hills should know how to spell Beverly, and that address? I dunno. He did add a phone number. I didn't try it, because I'm not a telephone person, but another potential mark did and it was dead.

Well, even I am not that dumb and my wife Irma smelled a rat from the first day! I started checking and found they've been writing to many authors with the same story.

Any scam is disgraceful, but most appear to be worked upon a bit of inherent dishonesty in the mark, so in a way, maybe they're taught a lesson.

But when thousands of hard-working writers think they're finally seeing some payoff for all their honest endeavors, and get scammed of the little money they may have in the bank, that is about as reprehensible as it gets.

I thought I'd just mention it so you might have a laugh for today. And Please don't forget to warn everyone else!

Arline is still sick and still CRANKY! And while the virus purports to be gone, none of the passwords work now, so everything has to be re-registered or RE- something-else and she's been shouting at the computer all week. I couldn't tell you what she said. My beloved Aunt Terry taught me never to say things like that in English. Don't know when she'll be back to normal and frankly I don't CARE!

Roger had an injury and had to have a fingernail removed, so no guitar for awhile.
Neither of them is in a petting mood and half the time treats have been forgotten. Not to mention the diet thing is still going on. Roger laments and give sympathy, but he still measure out half my food! (Unually, they forget by now...)
PLEASE don't YOU forget to send me news of any personal appearances, signings and so on... so I'll have some gossip to pass on next week.
Just send an e-mail to arline@mail.com with
 "News for Jack"
 in the subject line, and
I'll make sure it shows up here for all the world to see!

Fire Prevention Month

Fire Prevention Month

Thank the Fire Fighters Who Serve
Your Community!
by Tom Ward

VOLUNTEER SERIES, VOL. 2
Heroic firefighter Robert J. Doyle is back, still struggling with his inner demons, the result of an incident in war torn Lebanon, when he ordered the destruction of a complete village. As he walked through the carnage, Doyle vowed one day to pay for the loss of innocent lives.

Doyle, believes with each life he helps save; he makes a payment on his debt. While Doyle responds to his community’s calls for help, he ignores his own needs. To counteract flashbacks brought on by burnout, Doyle uses alcohol to keep going.

A Vanishing Breed centers on Doyle’s continuing struggle to find inner peace, and his on-again off-again relationships, but also examines the question of what compels all volunteers to respond.
