Women Sleuths and a writing tip

Newspaper reporter Hollis Ball is shocked to find herself shedding a tear when she learns her ex-husband, Sam Wescott, was killed in a boating accident. She is even more shocked when Sam's ghost shows up, asking her to find out who murdered him. LiFE Award from Literature for the Environment.

Question from the E-mail:  People in my writing group say my dialogue doesn't move fast enough. I didn't know it had to move...and how do I give it a shove???

Answer:  Make sure they only talk about important stuff. Dialogue has to move the story forward all the time. Otherwise it slows the pace down irretrievable. Never let your characters make small talk.  In real life people say "Hi, how are you?"  But not on the printed page.

In dialogue if someone says, "Where did you get that hat?" The other character replies, "Macy's."

In real life, if someone says, "Where did you get that hat?" The other person says, "Why, what's wrong with it?"  But you can see that kind of reply would not move the scene forward.

Good Read and a Question

Trying to find your place in high school can be a challenging time in a young girl’s life, even more if you have a brain disorder. Being diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, Chloe deals with the difficulties of trying to fit in with the right friends. Wanting to please them she gets into some situations leading to many disappointments. Chloe doesn’t see the destructive path she has made for herself or care about the consequences. With the end of the school year coming to a close can Chloe change things in time to graduate high school with her classmates or has she destroyed any chance of getting her diploma on time?

Question:  My critique partner says, "Your mood is all wrong." I rewrite and she still goes on and on about "Mood."  What is mood, anyway? How can I fix it?

Answer:  In writing Mood is the atmosphere we give a piece often by the details we choose to describe. All words have meaning, as denoted in the dictionary. But they also have a connotation, or feeling that people understand, without our having to explain and explain.

If we say we have the "blues," readers understand that we are sad.

All words have “feelings” as well and dictionary meanings. To establish "mood" in a fictional piece you should choose words that will subtlely make the reader understand the feelings of the characters.

Say your scene is a funeral. A sad occasion. Despite the "blue"analogy above, to emphasize the sadness, you should have cloudy skies and rain, mists gathering in the shrubbery, rain, or tears, running down the faces of the attendees, who all should be dressed in somber colors.

STORYBOOK II by Elena Dorothy Bowman
Within the pages of this book are stories that my mother once told me; of certain incidences that she remembered. But mostly it is compiled of the memories that were a part of our lives. Doors were never locked friends and neighbors were welcomed anytime they happened to pass by. And it was an era where whenever someone visited at dinner time, an extra plate was always set out for the visitor
to join in the family meal.

Arline and Roger are praying a lot. Dave and Shelley are getting ready to put into action a plan of treatment for his cancer.  They are all acting scared and worried, but the word is they're going to "fight it as hard as we can."

I am a tomcat, so I DO know about fighting and that sounds like a good plan to me. Watch. Stalk. Attack with everything you have! Maybe I should be praying, too, because I sure do want him to get better.  Do you think cat prayers count?

Please don't forget to let me know
what you are all up to!
Just send me an e-mail with

7 to 10 Inches predictied today!

Yes, we know it is MARCH!

LET IT SNOW, CUPCAKES!

Ingredients

Makes 24 cupcakes (you can easily halve this recipe to make 12 cupcakes – just use up the rest of the cake mix by baking an 8×8 cake and halving the amounts of candy melts and chocolate)
  • One box of white cake mix (to make your mix extra yummy, add an extra egg and replace the water needed with milk. For a vanilla mix, add a couple teaspoons of vanilla extract)
  • 2 containers of white frosting (any flavor, as long as it is white!) We like almond
  • Cupcake liners
  • 2 bags cocoa candy melts (I used Wilton)
  • 1 bag white candy melts or white chocolate
  • Sparkling sugar (Wilton makes one that is available in many grocery stores)
  • Granulated sugar
  • Zipper bags
  • Sheet protectors
  • Pretzle sticks
  • Tree clip art (I used this - the bare tree in the first row)
1. Print out a piece of paper with several copies of your tree. Insert the piece of paper into a sheet protector and grease it up, like this:

You can make smaller trees to fit more on one sheet!
2. Melt the brown candy melts according to the directions on the package. Place melted candy melts into a zipper bag and snip off one of the corners (you can use pastry bags, if you have them). All you have to do is pipe the candy using the picture as your guide.

The best part? The candy melts are totally forgiving.

In fact, the ridges and lines make it look even more tree-like! Use a toothpick for even more control, smoothing out areas or adding definition to others. You will be amazed at how realistic it turns out with very little effort! The only tricky part? The melts will begin to harden as you work, but you can re-melt the chocolate as needed (transfer to a heat-proof bowl for melting, then add back to the zipper bag).

3. Allow the trees to sit on the counter until firm to the touch, about 30-45 minutes. This is a good time to prepare and  bake your cupcakes, using the white cake mix.

4. Once the trees are “dry,” we are now going to add the snow onto the branches. Melt some white chocolate according to the package directions. Place chocolate in a zipper bag and snip off the tip (make a smaller hole for this than you did for the candy melts, since you want to be able to make smaller lines).

Pipe random line-y blobs onto the tree branches. Like this:

Now, while the white chocolate is still warm, douse the tree with sparkling sugar! (Once the trees are removed, you can roll up the sheet protector and pour the sprinkles back into the bottle to re-use).

Allow to dry completely, which should only take about 30 minutes.

5. Frost cooled cupcakes with white frosting. It doesn’t have to be perfect at all. Just use a butter knife to mound the icing onto the cupcake.

6. Mix some sparkling sugar and granulated sugar together into a small bowl (just eye-ball it, whatever looks like snow to you!) Dip the frosted cupcakes upside down into the sugar mixture, rolling around to coat.

If your frosting becomes lumpy, you will be able to re-shape it once it is covered in sugar – it won’t stick to your fingers!

7. Carefully remove the a chocolate tree from the sheet protector and attach a pretzel stick to the back with melted chocolate. Allow to cool until hard.  Insert the pretzel stick into the frosted cupcake.
The picture below shows a toothpick, but we tried that and it didn't work for us!

8. Repeat for all cupcakes.

Grammar Day Thoughts

Happy
Grammar Day!
The stories in this book will introduce you to a side of police work you’’re never seen, and a group of heroes you’ve never met. EYES puts the reader in the front seat of a police unit, lets us experience some of the drama, the danger and the joy of volunteers helping law enforcement in all kinds of situations.

TODAY IS GRAMMAR DAY!
Use our Language to
Give Yourself JOY!

Help us celebrate by remembering that Grammar and Punctuation are important, even in these days of Voice-activated software and often misspelled and/or mis-used words.

The following is a Miss-erable list of quotations I have collected recently from books I am currently editing or reading for pleasure:

“So our little lady is growing up.” She said, placing her hands on my shoulders and looked me up and down.
A comma should follow so, and it needs another comma after up, followed by a lower Case S on she.

"That's a God-Damned Shame!" He screamed.
God never gets a cap when it's used as slang, Damned shouldn't get a cap either, or Shame, and there should be no cap on He.

The doctor said we were alright.
All right is always two words, even in dialogue unless your character comes from New Jersey and works for Tony Soprano.

After we finished singing "Amazing Grace," a song that men once sang in prayer to be released from chains...
I have seen "Amazing Grace" used in movies and TV shows that were set before the copyright date, though I don’t recall now what year it was right now. Any song lyrics that are not in the public domain need the music publisher's permission to print them or you will infringe their copyright.

“Where do you think,” he faded into the crowd of students heading into the school.
A question mark is needed after think, and a cap on the following He, as that is an action, not a speech, and actions always get a separate sentence.

I turned to my Grandmother.
Should be grandmother, without a cap, the my before grandmother makes it a pronoun.

He grabbed a pear of scissors.
Should be a pair of scissors, a pear is a fruit.

"You know better then that!"
Than is a different thing, Then is a different time.

"I brought all my old Paul Anka CD’s.
CDs gets no apostrophe.

“Why you and not me,” accusingly she asked.
Should get a question mark after me, not a comma, and the speechtag should be reversed to "she asked, accusingly."
