Pleae pray...

When Shelley arrived at the hospital this morning, she found that David is, again, in Surgery.

This is not a day that I can write a post. Instead, I will post this poem that I wrote for my son  following his triumph after one of the bad times before Shelley came into his life.

We chose to call him David, because the name means "Beloved..."

       To our son...
                David

With the light in your eyes, you bring kindness,
there's joy in the warmth of your grin.
With strong hands you fix broken engines,
    and sometimes broken hearts.

A strong arm and a helping hand
you offer gladly to anyone in need,
Your greatest strength, sometimes your greatest
triumph lies in your vast good heart

You've known intense pain,
of the body, of the heart, of the soul
But like the steel of a good blade forged in flame
    hardship has made you stronger.

From your first day, we recognized your intelligence,
and watched your accomplishments with pride
We knew your strengths and weaknesses
And because you knew no fear, we felt afraid...

Now, you fight to accomplish your goal, while
We look on with love. Emotion builds until
We cannot speak...nor find the words
To tell you of the pride we feel in you now,
        And always, Beloved....

Books that went to press, or back to press, this week:

THE MURDER OF SEC. JUDD CANE: Adventures on Capital Hill Series, Vol. 2.     by Celine Rose Mariotti
Do you ever wonder what it would be like to have U.S. Senators who really did their job, got along well, and stood up for what was right? This is not your typical book about politics.  It’s the perfect U.S. Senate!  Throughout the book, there is an ongoing health care debate.  Senators Andy Thompson and Hunt Wagner lead the way with a resolution to try to stop President Robinson and Secretary von Schumann from sending troops to Botswana.  But a real adventure begins when Senator Thompson is kidnapped and Brian Travors, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State is suspected of being involved.  Senators Hunt Wagner and Darius Clemens head a committee hearing to get to the truth.  President Robinson suffers a heart attack and Vice-President Barry Newman takes over temporarily.  This book is a real page turner!  Read it and you’ll have hope for tomorrow!

STORYBOOK II by Elena Dorothy Bowman
Within the pages of this book are stories that my mother once told me; of certain incidences that she remembered. But mostly it is compiled of the memories that were a part of our lives. Doors were never locked friends and neighbors were welcomed anytime they happened to pass by. And it was an era where whenever someone visited at dinner time, an extra plate was always set out for the visitor to join in the family meal.

Galleys that went out, are still out, or went out Again, this week:

If she doesn’t, will her best friend ever forgive her for seeming to share more than a casual friendship with the her steady, Nathan?

THEN CAME HEAVEN, by Gilda Arruda
Then Came Heaven is a source of inspiration and guidance; it serves as a loving example of what it means to live no matter where the truth may lead you or how difficult it may be. It is also a lesson on the patience of change. Each page is the embodiment of hope, trust, knowledge, and self-acceptance
to develop a sense of worth within ourselves.

Jack's News!
  by your bookstore cat,
and gossip columnist!

I have to say that this cat feels neglected. Please, please, please, send me some news for my column.

Oh! Oh! OH!!
I almost forgot!

Author Andy Nunez will deliver a  lecture at the CBEC (Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center) March 28 ($5 a head, subject: Pirates), contact the CBEC in Grasonville for details. The event and it's time is not listed on their web site, but Google tells me the Center is located at:
600 Discovery Lane
Grasonville, MD 21638
PH 410-827-6694

ATTN: Joey Carr.  PLEASE send us your cover. You are doing a fine job promoting your book, but we have no book at all for either of US to sell, because it has been edited six weeks ago and cannot be completed  until we get a cover! If your artist can't be moved, I'd be happy to help Arline design one...How about one with a nice blue cat? Or even a calico one like my sister?
And Here at Home
Our Dave is not improving as quickly as we had hoped, and he sounded really down about it on the phone, today. (Yes, I do KNOW what he says, because Arline is so deaf the only way she can hear him at all is to put him on Speaker.) I sure understand why he's impatient, but this is going to take time. He had an awful lot of work done....

I am almost ashamed to have mentioned my own operation, which was only ONE day in the hospital. Dave was operated on, on Monday and this is Friday already, and I KNOW he is getting homesick. Especially since Shelley is here at home, because  she had to go back to work. Healing takes time... so I'm keeping up my cat prayers.  After all, every little bit helps.

The whole Chase family is grateful for all your prayers, thoughts and good wishes, too. It means a lot!

Our Sid is home, feeling a little better every day. I sure will be glad to see him when he is able to visit again.  :D (He and his lady, Kathy, have a very free hand with the cat treats whenever they come!)

Please don't forget to let me know
what you are all up to!
Just send me an e-mail with
 "News for Jack"
in the subject line, and
I'll make sure it shows up right here.
Thanks!

And Free This MONTH!
By Arline Chase
Set in the 1890s, KILLRAVEN is the story of Hope Voeschell, a young woman brought up to believe in non-violence, and DeCoursey Rogers a man who has known violence first hand, and what happens when an isolated peaceful community is confronted with a murderer. Killraven is a fictional Chesapeake Bay island, an isolated place rich in the traditions of its independent people. The novel is based in part on characters that originally appeared in the award winning short story collection, THE DROWNED LAND.

A Word from Arline

If I look happy, it's because I am.  Sid's surgery yesterday went "fairly well" and he was discharged last night and is recovering at home, sans gallstones.

Dave is still recovering from his surgery on Monday, the 23rd. He was out of bed yesterday, took a walk and had a nice sit up.  Still in a lot of pain, though, and not feeling as well this morning. He has Shelley with him for comfort.

We are all giving prayers of thanks for them both, though Sid says, "Forget me, I'm okay. It's Dave I'm worried about." We know Dave still has a long way to go, but at least there is a chance in the treatment program he has chosen.

I am giving the update this morning as Jack is singing hymns of praise with Roger. I add my voice and give thanks to all of you who have sent prayers out way.

What's UP!

Shhhh! Arline's Asleep in her chair.

Roger's playing the guitar so I am watching him closely. I'm convinced that if I could ever get my thumbs to work right I could play it, too. Anyway, whenever he sings, I sing along. But I did sneak away this morning to let you all know what's up.

Dave went into surgery at  UMCC (University of Maryland Cancer Center) at 5:15 this morning and got into the recovery room about 10 a.m.

Sid will go in for surgery at Dorchester General in Cambridge, Tomorrow at 8 a.m. to have his gall-bladder removed. They are saying outpatient. Well, that's what they said...

Anyway, thank you all for your prayers. We lit every candle in the house and prayed here until we got word from Shelley.

Thanks to everyone for their prayers...

Looks like the whole chase family is falling apart. Except for us cats.  (Yes, I KNOW! Arline would be yelling, "It's WE cats!") if she wasn't all worried up.  We've been playing all week, trying to cheer folks up, but so far it's not working...

Not only is her oldest son, Shelley's husband, Dave, facing cancer surgery on Monday the 23rd, but now her youngest son, Sid,  has developed medical problems as well and he will  have surgery on Wednesday the 25th. Here's hoping they will both be okay.

Y'all remember that old Chinese curse, "May you live in Interesting Times!"  Looks like we sure found some.

We will keep everyone posted.  Meanwhile Arline is sitting at the computer and trying to work, but just between us, mostly all she does is stare into space.
